A Guide to Using Tractors Safely

When I was younger, I used to look at tractors and think that it must be an awful lot of fun to ride about on one. And then, I visited a farm and I was told about a number of tractor incidents that had happened that had left the operators injured or even killed.

Knowing all about using tractors safely is essential if you are planning to use one, whether it is your first time or if you have been using them your whole life. There are certain simple rules that you should follow to ensure that you and people around you are not hurt

Initially, you should take look at yourself before embarking on your tractor journey. Are you suitably attired? Are you wearing suitable clothing that cannot get caught in any moving parts, and footwear that is durable and hard-wearing, and above all, sensible? Simple things that you would assume everyone would follow, but unbelievably, don't! Safety boots should also be worn; ones with a good grip as tractors can be slippery, especially when it has rained. Jewelry and long hair as well as flowing garments can all get caught in the machinery and therefore should not be worn on tractors at all.

The next thing you should look at before using a tractor is whether or not you have read the safety manual and know how to use it correctly and safely. Check the machinery for visible faults prior to operating it and ask yourself if you know enough about the equipment to use it properly and safely.

Getting in and out of tractors is another thing that a lot of people do not do correctly. There are certain places to grasp on to and access steps are there for a reason - to be used! Never get in or out of a tractor that is moving! You would think that this was obvious, but believe it or not, it has been done; people have tried to get in and out of moving tractors, resulting in rather serious injuries or worse!

When you get in your tractor, use a seat belt. Always ensure that you are in the cab, seat belt on and seated correctly before using any controls within the tractor. Last but not least, never operate tractors, or any other type of equipment, unless you know how to use it and have been trained in its operation properly.

If you follow these simple guidelines on safely using tractors, you can ensure that injuries and accidents are kept to a minimum, not only keeping yourself from risk, but to keep others around you safe as well!
